Ask your proposed best man first to make sure he accepts. Quickly and quietly get together with your other possible best men and tell them one on one. The actual best man should not be around to avoid gloating on his part or angry jest on the rejected best man’s part. Be honest when the talk is held to ensure he understands why you made the choice you made. Never forget that you are rejecting some of your friends in this choice. Nobody wants to be considered second best without good reason and if your best man cannot make it on the big day you will need a good friend as a backup.
